Got a call back for some filming work this week, which turned into a great bit of chaos training for me and Sig.

Canon fire, pyros, people running through the area, scent contamination everywhere. Exactly the kind of setup that shows you what’s really solid and what still needs work.

Training in calm, controlled conditions builds the basics. But put the dog into real noise and confusion, and you quickly see how strong your communication really is.

And as always… trust the dog.

Here’s why I teach multiple call-off options.

Each one builds control, but more importantly, it gives me flexibility when things change in the field. Sometimes I need her to break off and return, sometimes to drop mid-drive, sometimes to finish the job.

It’s not about stopping her, it’s about being able to redirect her with precision while she stays confident and driven.

Training different call-offs keeps her sharp, keeps her thinking, and strengthens how we communicate under pressure.

Looks scared? Not quite.

When she’s in the box with her head buried, shaking and tail tucked, it’s easy to think she’s scared of the whip cracks. But she’s not. That’s her body overloaded with drive and pressure at the same time.

She’s locked in on the food, running hot, and her nervous system is redlining a bit. The shake isn’t fear, it’s her trying to process all that energy while staying in the game.

The funny thing is she can hold a calm down stay while the whip goes off with no issue. So it’s not the noise, it’s the mix of food drive and pressure that gets her buzzing.

We’ll work it down slowly until she can stay powerful and calm under pressure.

The side of these little fur missiles people don't usually see! It's always really important to me to have a dog that can do both sides of life. Drag an aggressive guy out of a car kicking and screaming or have a quiet cuddle and fall asleep on my lap in the evening.
